The ultrasound is a special part of pregnancy where prospective parents can take a peek at their unborn child (or children) and see how they are developing in the womb. There are three kinds of ultrasounds we offer at Madison Women's Clinic: Vaginal, 2-Dimensional (Regular), and 3-Dimensional. Mid-pregnancy ultrasounds will be done by our Ultrasonographer. Any questions or concerns will be reported to the doctor for further evaluation. Please bring a blank tape if you would like the ultrasound recorded.
The vaginal ultrasound is done on your first visit. Your baby will not be very developed and may not look quite like a baby yet. However, the baby's heart has already started beating and is visible at this time. This is the best time for the doctors to estimate your due date. The measurements they take will show how well your baby is growing and progressing.
Madison Women's Clinic performs a 2-Dimensional ultrasound between 22 and 28 weeks. At this ultrasound, it is usually possible to determine the sex of your baby. If you do not wish to know the sex, make sure you let the nurse know of your wishes. You will be able to see many of the features of your baby including the face, arms, legs, and torso. The nurse will take measurements of your baby and will check for problems like cleft palette, brain abnormalities, or problems with the cord. Your insurance will be billed $200 for the ultrasound.
If you desire, and for an additional cost of $75 (not billed to insurance), you may also view the ultrasound of your baby using 3-Dimensional technology. The best time for this ultrasound is between 26 and 28 weeks. This is like a photo shot of your baby and is not medically necessary.
