Urinary Tract Infections (UTI)

Signs and symptoms of a UTI:
  • Frequency and urgency
  • Pain in lower abdomen, back, or flank
  • Burning
  • Blood in urine
Possible Preventions:
  • Try increasing fluids especially water, cranberry or orange juice(for increased acidity)
  • Warm tub baths
  • Avoid bubble baths
  • Urinate when urge arises
  • Urinate before and after intercourse
  • Avoid vaginal lubricants
  • Cotton panties are advised
  • Wipe front to back
  • Hygiene - keep clean and dry
  • Increase vitamin C in diet

Yeast Infections

Signs and symptoms of a yeast infection:
  • Thick, white or yellowish odorless discharge with curd-like consistency
  • Intense itch, swelling and inflammation of genitals
  • May burn upon urination
  • Painful intercourse

**Common to have vaginal itching before and after menses**

**Once diagnosed, recurrent infections can be treated with OTC anti-yeast products**

Possible Preventions:
  • Abstain from intercourse while treating
  • If frequency increases and symptoms not resolving, you should be seen by a doctor
  • Drying techniques:
    • Use blow dryer on low setting after shower or bath
    • No tight clothing
    • Diet of low sugar
    • Wearing panty-liner and changing frequently to remove moisture from vaginal area
  • May occur after treatment of antibiotics, may help to eat yogurt with lactobacillus to restore natural flora balance in system
  • May occur after menses, but usually resolves with drying techniques and decreasing moisture
