An Ounce of Prevention

Aug 29, 2026 | Uncategorized

Most women are very good at taking care of everyone else. Kids need appointments? Scheduled. Dog needs vaccines? Done.

Car needs an oil change? Probably handled. Your own checkup?

Suddenly it has been three years.

Preventive care is easy to postpone because, most of the time, you feel fine. There is no check engine light to remind us we are getting close to a burnt out engine.

That is exactly the point. Preventive care is meant to find problems before you crash and burn-out.

Think about your body like your car. You would not intentionally drive for years without checking the oil, tires, brakes, or engine simply because the car still starts every morning. Those small maintenance checks help catch problems before you are sitting on the side of the road with smoke coming out of the hood.

Your health works much the same way.

Routine care can include things like blood pressure checks, cholesterol screening, diabetes screening, cervical cancer screening, breast health discussions, vaccinations, mental health check-ins, and conversations about periods, hormones, sleep, weight changes, or other symptoms.

Exactly what you need, and how often, really depends on your age, medical history, family history, medications, and individual risk factors. The important thing is not to disappear from healthcare until something hurts.

Many conditions develop quietly.

High blood pressure often has no obvious symptoms. Blood sugar can gradually rise without you knowing. Cervical changes may be detected through recommended screening before they ever become cancer. Cholesterol problems can exist for years without making you feel different. Even symptoms we tend to normalize deserve attention. Maybe your periods have suddenly become much heavier. Maybe you are exhausted all the time. Maybe you have gained or lost weight without really understanding why. Maybe you have pelvic pain, unusual bleeding, persistent digestive problems, anxiety, or trouble sleeping.

Women are particularly talented at saying, “I’m probably just stressed.” Sometimes you are right, but sometimes, it’s something else. Something else that could be prevented.

Preventive care gives you the chance to figure that out earlier. Earlier is usually easier.

A small lifestyle change today may help prevent a much bigger metabolic problem later. Treating iron deficiency can be easier than living exhausted for two years. Monitoring blood pressure is much simpler than dealing with damage caused by uncontrolled hypertension.

There is also another reason women postpone appointments: fear. Sometimes we would rather not know, but avoiding a test does not change what is happening inside your body. It only changes when you find out. You do not need to become obsessed with your health or schedule every test advertised online. You simply need a relationship with a healthcare provider who knows your history and can help you understand what preventive care actually makes sense for you.

Your body does an extraordinary amount of work every single day. It deserves an occasional tune-up.

Schedule the appointment, not because something is necessarily wrong.

Because you would rather keep things right.
