Abnormal uterine bleeding

Aug 25, 2023 | Uncategorized

Did you know that up to 1/3 of women will experience abnormal bleeding at one time or another? Often, that bleeding happens young, just before menstruation begins, or at the transition of perimenopause or menopause. Abnormal uterine bleeding is just a general term we use to describe the irregularities that can commonly happen.

Besides the situations just mentioned what are some other causes of abnormal bleeding?

  •  Polyps
  • Malignancies
  • Ovulation dysfunction
  • Endometrial disorders
  • Coagulation problems
  • Inflammation of the cervix
  • Pelvic inflammatory disease
  • Other conditions such as hormonal imbalance

So, when is it time to worry?

One of the main factors to consider is the frequency and duration of the bleeding. If you experience heavy or prolonged periods that last longer than seven days, it is advisable to seek medical attention. This could be a sign of anyone of the conditions listed above.

Additionally, if you experience bleeding between periods or after sexual intercourse, it is important to consult with your healthcare provider. This type of bleeding, known as intermenstrual bleeding or postcoital bleeding, may indicate an infection, cervical polyps, or a more serious condition such as cervical or endometrial cancer.

Other symptoms to watch out for include pelvic pain, severe cramping, or the passing of large blood clots. If you experience any of these symptoms along with abnormal uterine bleeding, it is crucial to seek medical attention promptly to evaluate the underlying cause.

Ultimately, we are each so different, and what may be abnormal for one person may be within normal range for another. If you have concerns about your menstrual cycle or experience any abnormal uterine bleeding, it is always best to consult with a qualified healthcare professional. They can evaluate your symptoms, perform any necessary tests, and provide appropriate treatment or referrals to specialists if needed. Early detection and intervention can lead to better outcomes, so do not hesitate to seek help if you are worried about your abnormal uterine bleeding.
