What to pack for College

Aug 1, 2021 | Uncategorized

Headed to College soon?  You are busy getting the new bedding, cute décor, mini fairy lights and all the things but are you ready to take care of yourself?  Mom may be more than a block or two away so here’s a list of things to think about to better prepare you for the road of adulthood that lies ahead.

  • How is your general health? Before you leave, meet with your healthcare provider to make sure you are in the best health possible.  Take some time to learn about how to manage basic health issues like the common cold, sore throats, fevers etc.
  • How is your mental health?  Do you have a toolbox of tactics to help you deal with bouts of anxiety and depression?  College brings stressors you may not fully be prepared for but having the tools to help you cope will go a long way.  Meditation and breathing may seem a little woo, woo, but they help keep you in the moment, so you aren’t catastrophizing a moment.  It’s also important to have a network of loved ones and friends you can call when the going gets tough.  If you have been diagnosed with a mental health issue, make sure you have your doctor help you set up provider care in your new city.
  • How is your sleep hygiene?  Every college alumnus knows how hard it is to balance schoolwork and party time and while it’s tempting to sacrifice a little sleep for fun or extra study time, it truly impacts your overall health.  Getting a solid seven to eight hours a night, is critical to maintain the body’s circadian rhythms, keep hormones balanced, reduced stress, stronger immune system and allows you to better handle the challenges of life.
  • How is your diet? Knowing where you next meal is coming from is a smart way to maintain a healthy weight during your college years.  Meal planning isn’t the first thing on a college student’s agenda but it’s the best thing you can do for your health.  Simple meal plans to go to, will save you late night binging or excess snacking.

College is full of amazing opportunities, and you are full of potential.  As you spread your wings, be the best you, you can be.  These few simple tips will help you make the most of this incredible time.
